Living with Diabetes may seem like a hassle, but it’s an illness that can be managed with extra care and good relationships with your doctors. But it does require some work on your part. Here are some do’s and don’ts that you can discuss with your doctor to find a lifestyle that helps you stay healthy.
Do This: 
- Regularly visit your doctors to stay on top of your condition and any complications that may arise. Your team of doctors should include a primary physician and an endocrinologist, and may also include an eye doctor, foot doctor, dentist and pharmacist.
- When visiting the doctor, be sure to ask any questions you have and take notes if you don’t think you’ll remember the information. Be sure to discuss any concerns as well. You may also wish to get copies of your lab results.
- Closely monitor your blood sugar and make adjustments in diet and insulin as needed. Keep track of any changes you make and discuss them with your doctor.
- Keep a list of your medications and allergies in your wallet and the glove box of your car to assist first responders in case of an emergency.
Not This:
- Resist the urge to join the latest diet craze. Even if it’s helping your friends lose weight, it may cause a Diabetic’s health to wane. You can still cheer on your friends and their health goals, but stick to a diet that you know helps you manage your illness.
- Stepping out of a theater or interrupting a nice meal to take your medicine may cause an inconvenience, but remember that it’s a much better alternative to fainting or experiencing other complications. Always take your medicine on schedule.
- Smoking and inhaling secondhand smoke can increase the risk factors that are associated with Diabetes, making it much more difficult to control the disease. Avoid smoking and smokers whenever possible.
